Cerebral Palsy describes a group of chronic disorders that impair a person’s ability to control body movement and posture, occurs in two to six of every 1,000 births.
Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common form of neurological disorder. Spasticity is a common symptom observed following upper motor neuron syndrome causing increased muscle tone and muscle tightness, limiting movement and joint mobility. Tight muscles cause decreased range of motion and limited joint mobility. This leads to abnormal gait commonly seen is scissoring gait, with 1 foot crossing in front of the other with each step.
According to Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinics of North America, passive stretching alone is not effective for long-term improvement in muscle tightness for children with cerebral palsy .
HOW DO WE MANAGE ADDUCTOR MUSCLE TIGHTNESS?
PIASTM THERAPY is the answer but let’s understand more about everything.
http://www.pediatricphysiotherapy.in/pediatric-iastm-piastm/
What happens if adductor muscles are tight or spastic?
- Hips and pelvis are often locked as if crouching while walking
- Ankles may be turned inwards while walking
- Feet often make contact with the ground primarily at the ball of the foot, not the heel (may look like “tip toe” walking)
- Knees and thighs may cross or touch while walking
WHAT WE DO TO REDUCE IT?
Most common things which therapists & Parents follow are:
- Exercises
- Electrical Modalities
- Aquatic Therapy
- Botox Intervention
- And if nothing works — SURGICAL INTERVENTION
BUT WHAT IF WE INFORM YOU THAT NOW SOMETHING MORE BETTER DEVELOPED , GOAL ORIENTED, NON – SURGICAL AND ONE OF THE FASTEST WAY TO REDUCE TIGHTNESS IS AVAILABLE !
Yes, PIASTM Therapy – “ A revolutionary therapy for kids with muscle tightness and contractures. ”
Paediatric Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (PIASTM) is a therapeutic technique that uses specific instrument “Accel Tool – Accelerate Healing” on children to promote mobilization of restricted tissue to increase flexibility, to increase range of motion, to reduce contracture.
